Study for the test

Practice questions written to the official Highway Code and DVSA car theory syllabus. These are not official DVSA exam questions, and the real test is confidential. The real theory test also includes a separate hazard perception video test, tap Hazard perception on the home screen for how it works and official free practice clips. Verify facts against the current Highway Code. Works offline.

Hazard perception

The second half of the theory test

You watch 14 video clips (about a minute each) filmed from a moving car, and click the moment a hazard starts to develop, something that would make a real driver slow down or change direction. There are 15 scoring hazards, each worth up to 5 points. The pass mark is 44 out of 75. You must pass this and the multiple-choice part in the same sitting.

The knack (this is what most people get wrong)
  • Click once as the hazard begins to develop, then again as it clearly becomes a hazard. Two well-timed clicks usually score.
  • Click too early (on a hazard that is only potential) and you score nothing for it; the window has not opened yet.
  • Never click in a steady rhythm or spam clicks to be safe, the test detects this and gives you 0 for that clip.
  • Watch for a developing hazard: a parked car pulling out, a pedestrian stepping off a kerb, a cyclist wobbling, not every parked car or side road.
Practise with the real click mechanic

The DVSA gives 3 free official practice clips that work exactly like the real test. This is the best place to feel the timing:

These are practice clips, not the official test clips (the real ones are confidential and never shown beforehand). They teach the technique and timing. Do a few sessions until two well-timed clicks feel natural.
